Overwatch

I did not see this one coming. I did not play in the beta, so I am a little late to the party, but this game has scratched an fps itch I didn't know I still had. What a wild ride!

At the moment, I am still digging into the feel of each character. So far, some early favourites are D. Va, Mercy and McCree.

I am also really enjoying the lore of the game. I've read all the Atlas News items, listened to Lucio's music, read Mei's journal, read all the comics and watched all the trailers and origin shorts. The story has me really intrigued.

To summarize: there was a Terminator-esque (this is a word now) war in which highly intelligent AI, called omnics, rose up against humanity. In an improvised attempt to deal with the catastrophic war, the UN created a special paramilitary task force called the Overwatch. The group's members were made up of particularly effective fighters who had proven asymmetrical warfare techniques they used against the robots. The Overwatch won the war and were hailed as heroes.

It wasn't long, however, before the tides of public opinion turned against them. In large part, this was because of the unscrupulous methods and unknown motivations of Gabriel Reyes (Reaper) and his Blackwatch subdivision which more and more came into direct contravention of the noble ideals for which the Overwatch and its leader, Jack Morrison (Soldier: 76), stood.

The conflict between the two former friends eventually led to the destruction of Overwatch headquarters in Switzerland and the official disbanding of the Overwatch. In the fighting, Jack Morrison was presumed to have died and Gabriel Reyes to have disappeared. The other members of Overwatch dispersed across the globe.

Most recently, acts of vigilantism around the world have been attributed to members of the group and to the mysterious Soldier: 76 (who is strongly suspected to be Jack Morrison, but in a no-longer-heroic and far more selfish incarnation). Meanwhile, Gabriel Reyes and partner Widowmaker have begun to attack Overwatch targets and sow chaos on an international scale. First, Reyes attempted to break into an old Overwatch outpost still maintained by former Overwatch member Winston. Winston manages to prevent Reyes from hacking into Overwatch's Athena computer system and realizes that because of Reyes and other terrible events happening, that Overwatch still have a place as protectors and heroes. He uses Athena to recall all former non-Blackwatch members of the Overwatch to active duty.

Tracer is the first to respond. She and Winston work together to attempt to foil two more Blackwatch operations. In the first case, Reaper and Widowmaker attempt to recover an Overwatch artifact (a gigantic armored power glove) from a museum. They are successful, though just barely and not without the heroic help of two boys who use the artifact on Widowmaker during the fighting. The fight is captured on security cam footage and released to the media. The world becomes graphically aware that Overwatch members are active once more.

In the second case, Tracer decides to attend a speech by an omnic spiritual leader who represents a chance for healing of wounds and unification between humans and omnics. Widowmaker shows up and after a protracted battle with Tracer, manages to assassinate the omnic spiritual leader and escape. Tracer asks her: Why?!, but Widowmaker just smiles mysteriously before hitching a ride on an ominous, futuristic plane.

Against this backdrop, new heroes are also arising to deal with threats to global security. These include D.VA who is a South Korean celebrity mech pilot-turned-vigilante, Mei who is a Chinese environmentalist, Hanzo and Genji, brothers from a Japanese criminal family who have turned their eyes to bigger problems in the world, Lucio who is a Brazilian musical genius and who sees a chance to make the world a better place and many more.

It will be interesting to see where the story goes from here.
